If you're in town for the event or just following on social media, do yourself a favor and read up on the legacy of this longstanding, underground gay event.
Above, from the slideshow of historic IML photos from the last 40 years.
From the article:
Size matters at the daddy of all leather competitions with a total of 72 contestants—the largest number on record—competing at International Mr. Leather ( IML ) 2018 in Chicago, IL, surpassing the previous record of 66 contestants from 2002. IML draws an estimated 18,000 attendees from around the globe who will have a boots-on-the ground presence this year to mark the 40th anniversary of the event.
Those boots will also have the opportunity to receive leather care at the 26th annual International Mr. Bootblack competition, which takes place throughout the IML weekend and features four contestants this year.
IML began as a competition at the Gold Coast, a long-shuttered gay men's leather bar in Chicago owned by iconic businessman and IML founder Chuck Renslow. The contest became so popular it exceeded the pub's capacity, and in 1979, International Mr. Leather was born. Today, IML has evolved into a multiday event featuring fetish workshops, speakers and dance parties, with a Leather Market full of kink wares from chains to chaps...

Thanks to one of our favorite sex advice columnists, Dr. Dick, of Dr. Dick's Sex Advice blog, for highlighting this article from MetroUK, and providing even more reason to keep on strokin'!
Metro UK writer Ellen Scott says:
There’s no shame in masturbating.
It’s a stress reliever, it’s the only form of entirely safe sex, and, as new research notes, it might actually make you better at sex with another person.
Sex toy brand Tenga have revealed that men who masturbate weekly are 10% more confident in their own sexual performance than those who masturbate less often.
Men who masturbate weekly or more often are also 12% more satisfied with the quality of their orgasm, and 6% more confident in their own body.
Tenga surveyed 2,000 UK men for the results, asking them about their solo sex habits and their experiences with other people.
They found that 96% of British men masturbate, and that the average person discovers masturbation at age 15. The top three reasons why we masturbate are to achieve pleasure, to relieve sexual tensions, and to de-stress. Other popular reasons include to aid sleep, to deal with boredom, their partner isn’t up for sex, and to help improve sexual performance.
British review YouTube channel Oh Boy Reviews recommends The Boss stroker by Perfect Fit Brand
Of course, this study only shows a positive correlation between masturbation and improved sexual satisfaction and confidence in your own body. What’s not clear is a cause and effect relationship.
It’s possible that men who are more sexually confident are more comfortable masturbating more, or that men who are comfortable in their bodies tend to be more open to exploring themselves sexually, rather than the other way round.

A great little post from sex advice website Your Tango. Writer Rick Clemons runs down the list of gay sex stereotypes and unravels 'em one by one.
For whatever reason, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender individuals, and other members affiliated with the (LGBTQ) community keep getting this bad rep for being "sexual deviants of society." Yet, if a married heterosexual couple chooses to embark into their own private world of Fifty Shades Of Grey, enjoying a romp into BDSM, they're doing it under the sanctity of marriage!
How many married straight couples have felt the spontaneous desire to pull off to the side of the road for a quick romp? Understand my point yet?
It's a rather a crude joke that every situation described in the aforementioned paragraph are stereotypical definitions of gay men. With all due respect, until you've been a gay man and walked in his shoes, don't assume to know what makes him stand at attention in his Levi's 501s.

In honor of what would have been the artist's 98th birthday, take the @itgetsbetter tour of the Tom of Finland House
“Is there any other artist that we ejaculate to and also have on the coffee table?” – Time Out, Chicago
May 8 marked what would have been the 98th birthday of a man who one could arguably say was the most influential--and certainly the most visible--artist in contemporary America gay culture, Touko Laaksonen, known as Tom of Finland (1920-1991).
To celebrate, the It Gets Better Project presents a video tour of the Tom of Finland House, along with a commemorative T-shirt. The tour is hosted by Official Tom of Finland Ambassador and It Gets Better Cofounder (and husband to Dan Savage),Terry Miller.
“You see Tom of Finland drawings in almost every leather bar in the United States,” says Miller in the video. You see them in tons of gay bars. It’s almost code like, here is where we are accepted. Here is where you will find a community for yourself.”
What gay man doesn’t remember the first time he saw a Tom of Finland illustration? The slim hips and bulging muscles, the lips, eyes, the groping! Hallucinogenically hyper-masculine, electrifying and jaw-dropping, they left an indelible impression. John Waters agrees.
“I think he captured what every gay man was looking for. An exaggerated man. A VERY exaggerated man. And it was the opposite of the gay man in the 50s,” he says.
While the leather/fetish scene existed in early underground gay and gay bar culture, it was Tom of Finland who provided the blueprint for many seeking to adopt the look, and who put the look on a pedestal. Frankly, Tom of Finland men where gods!

Carolyn Yates at Autostraddle, the wesbite for "kickass lesbian, bisexual & otherwise inclined ladies (and their friends)" recently posted this smart, well-researched sex toy history quiz.
She introced the quiz thusly:
"You know that sex toys have been around since before that franchise blew up in 2015, and before rabbits and Magic Wands appeared on Sex and the City, and before doctors’ offices in the 1900s. But for all that they’re a fascinating way to look at technology, gender, sexuality, culture, censorship, human connection, innovation and the pursuit of really great orgasms, sex toys and their history are often overlooked. For this quiz, I encourage you to cheat. Knowledge is power."
Pssst! If you need to cheat a bit, check out our very first blog post, "Dildos, Strap-Ons, and Pegging: An Anal History." Above, a clue to the answer to the first question.
Now, hop over to Autostraddle and take the quiz here and don't miss Yate's sex toy history book recommendations at the bottom of the post.

HuffPost, Men’s Health, Allure, AskMen and Cosmo are Fans!
In the recent HuffPost story, "12 Sex Toys That Sex Therapists Say Will Change Your Life," Stephen Snyder, a sex therapist in New York City and the author of Love Worth Making: How to Have Ridiculously Great Sex in a Long-Term Relationship recommended two of Perfect Fit Brand’s most unique products, The Play Zone Kit and The Bumper (below, in order).
Here's what he had to say about each:
“The Bumper is made by a company called Perfect Fit. This very soft silicone [SilaSkin™] device fits over the base of a man’s penis, reducing penetration depth. Ideal for men with very long penises who can’t thrust freely for fear of hurting their partners — or for couples craving a different kind of thrusting sensation. This video shows how it works.”
“Again, from Perfect Fit, this Play Zone Kit takes the guesswork out of selecting a cock ring. You get a full set of silicone cock rings of various sizes stacked on a conical tower, so you can experiment with which ones work best for you.”

From the series website:
"From the nucleus of one woman’s work, the show delves into power, capitalism, and sexuality with a spoonful of dark humor. Every relationship calls into question: Who is in control? Which side is the end of the leash?
Each episode reveals a character's particular kink or fetish, while purveying how they integrate their desires in their daily life. The contiguous story weaves through layers of Mistress Yin’s past and present personal life, to uncover the roots of her own desires: A story of violence and transformation.
MERCY MISTRESS is intended to tantalize, teach, and destigmatize the shame that shrouds kink sexuality and sex-work."
Screenings are happening over the next month in New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. Check the website for details. And go, support. This is the kind of smart, sex-positive, and frankly fascinating storytelling that we need more of.
While you're on the site, be sure to meet Poppy Liu who plays "Mistress Yin" "a classically trained actress, a queer first generation Chinese-American, and a poet who uses storytelling as a vehicle for healing and collective liberation."
